Food is just one variable among many in the creation and maintenance of vibrant health but it’s a tasty one to look at. The food choices we make become the building blocks of our cells: Those pizzas we eat literally shape the structure of our skin; those leafy greens we drink definitely inform the energy of our body.

I like my meals to be both satisfying and healthy. I don’t touch junk, ever. At the same time I  want to revel in the pleasure of flavor. Who says you can’t have your luscious hot cocoa and drink it too?

Community heals as we inspire each other to live our best lives. I happen to be passionate about food and great health so I thought you might enjoy my recipe for Superfood Hot Chocolate. This luminous beverage has been a staple and ritual at my house for years. I start my day with it and often enjoy another one in the afternoon or as a nightcap. The ingredients vary as I listen to what my body wants to thrive that day.

You don’t need to have a pantry overflowing with superfoods and tonic herbs. Start small. Pick 3-4 ingredients that speak to you and see how they make you feel. Use a tiny amount if you’re new to the world of superfoods and tonic herbs (about the size of your pinky nail per ingredient).

Consistency is key. The idea is to enjoy these stellar foods every day to build up a vibrant ecosystem within. Here we go:

— Makes 2 —

All ingredients organic or wildcrafted. Always invest in the best.

  • Heirloom cacao powder (Arriba Nacional; 2-3 tablespoons)
  • He Shou Wu powder (Promotes longevity and youthfulness)
  • Astragalus (Aura protector)
  • Medicinal mushrooms such as reishi or chaga (Immune support)
  • Chia or hemp seeds (Add body + great source of omegas; 1 tablespoon)
  • Spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice, fennel, cardamom (Couple of dashes)
  • Coconut oil or cacao butter (1-2 tablespoons)
  • Hot water (2 cups)
  • Optional: Goji berries (3-4)

Put dry ingredients in a high-speed blender. Add water & fat. Blend until frothy (30 secs). ENJOY!
