This should be enough to cause the University of Wisconsin, Madison, to lose its educational charter. Apparently, its students believe the statue of Lincoln found there should be removed because they are so stupid and uneducated that they think Lincoln owned slaves. Yes… this very basic yet fundamental fact has escaped them: The most eloquent, strident supporter of the abolition of slavery, and a man who committed the nation to war to end it, and lost his life to assassination because of it, was NOT a slave owner.
When someone asked the angry students why they were angry at Lincoln, this was one protester’s (staggering) answer:
“Everyone thinks of Lincoln as the great, you know, freer of slaves, but let’s be real: He owned slaves, and as natives, we want people to know that he ordered the execution of native men,” said one of the protesters.
“Just to have him here at the top of Bascom is just really belittling.”
This claim from the protester is patently false. The Great Emancipator grew up in poverty and never owned slaves.
Not only that, but his debates with fellow Illinois statesman Stephen A. Douglas offer some of the clearest reasons for why the institution of slavery violated the American creed.
Seriously… who would send their kids to a place where such stupidity runs rampant and unchecked. I’ve said it before, and I will continue to say it; it is a best parental neglect, and at worst a form of abuse to send your children to institutions like this.
Just don’t.
