tries to escape from the Matrix of our dominant cultural narrative of Individualism.
For some reason, I’m reminded of this exchange.
Brian: You are all individuals!
Crowd: We are all individuals!
Voice in crowd: I’m not!
Crowd: Shhhh!!!
It’s amazing, really, how American culture fosters the myth of individualism while simultaneously creating mass produced music, film, goods and ideas that everybody swallows uncritically while clapping themselves on the back for breaking with the Herd. From Britney Spears to the Da Vinci Code, we are total suckers for prefab culture and ideas, yet we still deeply believe we are Independent Thinkers.
The only really counter-cultural thing I know of is the Catholic Faith. If you really want to be a weirdo, take the whole thing seriously with out editing it. You’ll stick out like a sore thumb wherever you go.
