as Brian Vissagio. It’s amazing to me how many people describing themselves as Christian have completely adopted Hitler’s philosophy of totalerkrieg and sincerely belief they can bracket their belief that, in war, you can suspend Christian morality and do “whatever it takes” to win.

I’m also struck by Brian’s remarks about how, the more purposeful a society becomes in organizing on a vast scale to commit world-historical evil, the more everybody in that society speaks in the passive voice and tries to deny that they have anything to do with bringing that evil to pass. It reminds me of Evelyn Waugh in (if memory serves) A Handful of Dust: “Everybody agreed that it was nobody’s fault.”

And so we see the amazing spectacle of a civilization declining into all sorts of evil–coupled with a huge drop in attendance at the sacrament of confession. What wonderful people we must be to not need it anymore! Or, at any rate, if anything is wrong, it’s not my fault.
