Here’s the former Number 2 guy who took an oath to uphold the laws of the land, airing his contempt for that law to the cheers of millions of people who used to be called “conservatives”:
CHENEY: Chris, my sort of overwhelming view is that the enhanced interrogation techniques were absolutely essential in saving thousands of American lives and preventing further attacks against the United States, and giving us the intelligence we needed to go find Al Qaeda, to find their camps, to find out how they were being financed. Those interrogations were involved in the arrest of nearly all the Al Qaeda members that we were able to bring to justice. I think they were directly responsible for the fact that for eight years, we had no further mass casualty attacks against the United States.
It was good policy. It was properly carried out. It worked very, very well.
WALLACE: So even these cases where they went beyond the specific legal authorization, you’re OK with it?
CHENEY: I am.
Cheney’s fine with breaking the law. And millions of Americans are fine with Cheney being fine with breaking the law. Among these “good policies” that were “properly carried out” were threats to murder children and rape family members of detainees. Also, among the policies that worked “very, very well” were interrogations that resulted in evidence so compromised that it was inadmissible in court. But the policy must still be defended at all costs by True Americans.
It’s little things like this that basically leave me feeling that I can’t trust anybody yammering away on my TV or radio when it comes to trying to forge an authentically Catholic understanding of a just society. The people who are getting paid to have hysterics over Obama had nothing but “boola boola” when this man was in office. Indeed, they still have nothing to say but “boola boola” for him. They pretend to care about lawless regimes, but really what they care about is allowing the wrong people to be running lawless regimes. If they could get away with it themselves, they’d grab the chance in a heartbeat.
And the people who were paid to have hysterics over Bush have had nothing to say but “boola boola” for the Dem commitment to the Most Holy Sacrament of Abortion and the sacramentals of ESCR and gay marriage. Neither of these punditocracies are worth trusting as far as they can be thrown.
