Tongue-In-Cheek Doesn’t Always Play Abroad September 1, 2009

A Swiss reader writes:

I get links to your site fro newadvent.org occasionally. This headline sparked my interest. Reading it, I’m a little aghast!

Your proposal is interesting, but the Mass is NOT the place for it. Not in any way, shape, or form regardless of how in-tune to ecumenism the pastor or bishop may be.

The Mass is the place where we celebrate and worship God. It’s the sacred mystery which is central to our faith. While the sermon is clearly intended to be a “teaching” moment, it is intrinsically linked to the Sacrament of Holy Orders and has it’s place within the Mass as it is directly linked with conversion and fostering faith. Granted not every priest was a born preacher…

Your option is to have a small class. It’s just not the place for it.

Oh dear! Please don’t misunderstand. I was being completely facetious. I think such a proposal would be extremely foolish. My *real* point was that American Catholics are doing something very much like this by allowing their hearts and minds to be formed by the rantings of a rather crazy American ex-Catholic Mormon named Glenn Beck. My point was that if my idea would be bad if we were catechized in the social doctrine of an ex-Catholic Mormon at Mass for a few minutes each Sunday, how much more foolish is it for Catholics to look to him as a teacher and guide for hours and hours each week over the TV and radio?

Thanks for your concern. Sorry for the confusion I caused you.
