This is the last of the 7 part testimony Glenn Beck gave in 2007 to an LDS audience I assume in Salt Lake.
I watched all 7 parts beginning with this clip and enjoyed the whole thing, truth be told. As you’d guess, it is very revealing but in none of the places he thinks it is. I think it confirms what you guessed/deduced last week about what being an adult convert to Mormonism means about one’s rational processes. What is fascinating is that he believes he did what President Jefferson said all men must do about religious faith: “Question Boldly.”
He says that and then admits it came down to his fiancee’s urging, a friend’s good example, and his wanting to believe in Zion, a world in which people loved one another.
Not a word about Joseph Smith, Jr., or anything that Christians object to in the faith.
Bizarre. I suppose he knew the Church intended to use it as a film so the none of the bold questions could be brought up lest anyone get confused.
John, neck-deep in Mormon Studies because of the book I’m writing on Twilight.
That’s more or less what I figured. The man’s been through his share of trauma. I’ve never denied that. I merely deny that it’s possible to be an adult Mormon convert due to exercise of critical thinking skills and therefore I deny that Beck should be any adult’s guide to the use of such skills.
Hope your new Twilight adventure in lit crit is fruitful. It was fun chatting with you about it!
