A reader writes:

One of the things which really marked out G.K. Chesterton’s critiques of people was that whatever he thought of them, you could always feel his sympathy to them. It was less palpable in his discussions of politicians of the time, but it was still there.

I don’t know if you feel any sympathy towards those you criticize; if you do, it’s not apparent in your writing. E.g. “sin makes you stupid” has the feeling of “renegade” (Matt 5:22, according to the jersusalem bible, the second word added “impious” to “fool”).

Being essentially a catholic convert from atheism myself (and moreover my favorite author being G.K. Chesterton), I naturally look to find others like myself, so I’m drawn to your blog. But for a while I’ve found it off-putting, and I finally realized why. Anyhow, this feedback may be useful to you, or may not be, but for what it’s worth, whatever sympathy you have with those people you criticize, it doesn’t really come through in your writing.

Yeah. I think I can be pretty sharp-tongued and don’t really have much to say in reply except, “Pray for me.” I’d like to get better at responding in love and I have a long way to go.
