It’s not just something about her: it’s everything about her. It’s like she was created in a laboratory for the specific task of driving Jewish liberals around the bend. The hostility is visceral and pre-rational: the loathing comes first and it is only later, if at all, that the loathers can articulate why they find her so repellent.
Fascinating.
Someday, somebody will do a psych analysis of all this, with a broader look at other groups and individuals who battened on Sarah Palin as The Worst Person Who Ever Lived.
Make no mistake: she’s already lost my vote for bailing out on her duties as governor so she could go pursue the brass ring of book deals, speaking gigs, and (you know she’s gonna try) a shot at the GOP nomination. But having decided she’s not my cup of tea, I pretty much move on and think about other things. What amazes me is watching the undying hatred of the woman that animates people like Andrew Sullivan, who just can’t get enough of hating on her and who construes every single syllable she utters and every smallest deed in the blackest possible light. He seems to get something from it: as though she were a sort of human voodoo doll upon whom he can vent all his rage and contempt as a sort of expiation or catharsis. It’s like a lifetime of anger at… who? is being obsessively and compulsively directed at her. Not even virtually normal, much less healthy.
