Surreal secular messianism from the weird suburbs of American Evangelicalism.

Just to gain some perspective, this phenomenon is nothing new in the life of nation-states. American secular messianism is but the latest manifestion of the nationalist tendency to identify one’s country with (and ultimately try to supplant) Holy Church.

As Scott Hahn once remarked to me: the biblical pattern seems to be that what pride is to an individual person, nationalism is to a people. Sooner or later, every people seems to hit the point where they want to feel as though they occupy a special and privileged place in the Divine Plan.
