Indians are in an uproar right now because some textbook had a picture of Jesus holding a beer and cigarette.

I find that odd because there are any number of Christian saints and admired figures who quite enjoyed both beer and tobacco (Chesterton, for instance). I don’t see what is blasphemous per se about depicting Jesus enjoying them. This seems like it would be more blasphemous to Puritans than to Catholics, but the story mentions Catholics in a tizzy about this too.

I *suspect* this is one of those place in the Christian psyche where we intuit that such activities, while they may be goods for us, are not altogether fitting for Christ. Sort of like marriage. Nothing wrong with it (it’s a sacrament after all). Yet it’s just fitting that Jesus remain celibate. It’s also why “Jesus with an AK-47” pictures jar. Not fitting.
