I’m a regular reader of your excellent blog, and fellow native of the Pacific Northwest (made my First Communion at St. Luke parish in Shoreline). I hope you do not mind a prayer request – I made a promise to the woman below that I would pray earnestly for her and for her family.
I flew from Ohio to San Diego on business this past weekend, and sat next to this woman on the last leg of my flight. She’s the 47-year-old mother of a three-year-old boy, and she has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer that has metasticised to her liver. She was flying to San Diego so that she could drive into Mexico and obtain surgery and other medical treatment that, according to her, the doctors in Ohio had refused to give her. The fundraiser mentioned in that link above had partially paid for the trip she was currently on, but even if she survived the treatment (something she was unsure of), she did not expect to live much longer. Despite that, she was remarkably upbeat on the flight, talking with me about all of the wonderful times she had had during her earlier life when she lived in Las Vegas (where our common connecting flight had originated). She also spent literally the entire flight consuming what must have been 30 or 40 pills of various shapes, sizes, and colors – she was still taking her meds one by one as we were landing in San Diego.
Her story was absolutely heartbreaking, and I promised her that I would pray often for her and for her son. If you could do the same, it would be most appreciated.
Father, hear our prayer for a miracle of healing for this woman and her family through your Son Jesus Christ. Mother Mary, pray for her and all who love her and care for her! Sts. Luke and Peregrine, pray for her!
