A new ad appeared in my mailbox:

An amazing amount of new information about Christ and Christianity has been discovered over the past few decades that is painting a much clearer picture about what Christ and his Apostles taught, and it will shock you.

The great gnostic selling point: don’t be a sucker by listening to the testimony of the Church that he founded. Listen to me instead! I have “new information” about Jesus. (Caveat emptor: There is no “new” information about Jesus. None whatsoever.)

Don’t let other’s tell you one way or the other, find out for yourself. Get the facts, learn the truth, there is more good news and it’s really good news.

Translated: Don’t let other’s tell you one way or the other, let *me* tell you instead. It turns out Jesus taught what I teach.

If you love Jesus you owe it to yourself to learn all you can about him (even if to debunk it). Don’t just blow it off or cling to your certitudes, get all the facts. His word has come a second time and it’s good that you hear it.

Translation: If you won’t buy my book it’s because you are a fearful, close-minded bigot. By “facts” and “his word has come a second time” I mean “Listen to the stuff I made up just now because there is no new information about Jesus”.
