The 18th and 19th century flat-footed atheist rationalists at least had the advantage of trying to create something nobody had ever tried before. It ended in a massive bloodbath, but they at least had the excuse that they didn’t see it coming and were insane idealists, many of them.
How on earth the New Atheists can look at the track record of Atheism in Power and imagine, Bullwinkle-like, that this time for sure it will work and will lead to human flourishing… It’s beyond me. You have to be a special kind of fool to worship the Intellect so devoutly while using is so sparely.
