Well, the bloodbath happened as promised. Dems are saying, “Hey! It wasn’t quite as bloody as the most hubris-filled boasting of the GOP predicted, so we actually triumphed” (Yes, sin makes you that stupid.)
Meanwhile, our ruling classes on the Right are calculating, not how to govern for the common good, but how to gain more power. Here’s Charles Krauthammer, America’s premier apologist for torture, fresh from beating war drums for our disastrous War of Salvation through Democratic Capitalism:
“If you’re Republican, I think it works rather well in terms of strategy for ‘12. You really didn’t want control of the two houses because then Obama could do a Truman where he ran against the do-nothing Congress and ran for re-election. If you put too much of the actual official power in the hands of the Republicans, it makes them responsible. Right now, I think they’re in perfect position tactically. Control the House, object, propose stuff that Obama may veto and run on that against him in 2012.”
Translation: We won enough seats to make sure that nothing gets done, but we don’t have to take responsibility for not doing it. Just block Obama. Make some token gestures he will veto, and then gain more seats and maybe the White House. Then we will have Power again! And that’s the goal!
Last time they had Power, of course, what did they do? Well, they plunged us into a war of choice which we have yet to extricate ourselves from, a war that has led to the destruction of Iraqi Christianity, which is a small price to pay for the secular messianic transformation of the Islamosphere that will, any day now, occur. They also gave us a ruined economy (from which we have yet to extricate ourselves from). They did stop Bush from giving us pro-choice nitwit Harriet Miers (though she was his very first choice, making clear where he stood on the “pro-life convictions vs. lapdog loyalty” scale of values). Instead we got two justices who have declared Roe to be “settled law”. And we can expect more such glorious governance from the Bourbon Republicans who have remembered everything and learned nothing. So let us celebrate this glorious day of change!
On the bright side, the latest stab at imposing a state income tax on Washingtonians went down in flame. Things are now so desperate that I’m afraid, they are going to have to simply find a judge who will decree a state income tax to be part of some penumbra in the state constitution and impose it by judicial fiat. Ineducable Washingtonians don’t know what’s best for them and so, like the rest of the country, need judges to rule them.
So it goes. Once again we discover Chesterton was wise: The world does not progress. The world wobbles.
