…with Peter Kreeft’s work, but I think he’d enjoy it if he isn’t. John writes here and here about Bruce Charlton’s suggestion that we need more pagan missionaries. His point is that modern paganism is a rather pathetic affair, basically concocted from nothing by dilletantes who are trying to avoid Christianity by cobbling together junk they imagine is pagan, giving it a Lord of the Rings dressing, and dropping a few Thous and Thees in to make it smell old. Charlton want to convert the world to pre-Christian paganism because that’s the best way to prepare for it to receive Christ.
He’s got a point. When pre-Christian paganism was done, the pagans all asked to be baptised. As Kreeft says, pre-Christian paganism was a virgin. Post-Christian paganism is s divorcee.
