Genesis and Evolution

Genesis and Evolution December 22, 2011

A reader asks:

After conversing with my brother-in-law (a baptized Catholic but practicing Baptist), he expressed an interest in understanding the relationship of evolution and Creation. He is, from my understanding, of the mind that the two are incompatible, but it also became clear that he’d never actually read the Creation narrative of Genesis, so I think he’s open to suggestions. Can you or your readers recommend any books from a Christian perspective on the compatibility of evolution and Christianity?

Best book I know for a terrific overview of Scripture (including a fantastic discussion of how to read the Genesis account as the original author intended (hint: not as a science text) is Walking with God by Tim Gray and Jeff Cavins.

Best thing I’ve read about how to reconcile the Church’s tradition of human origins with the present state of our science is this terrific piece by Mike Flynn. My own thoughts are here.

Bottom line: all truth is God’s truth, so the truth the nature reveals will never contradict the truth that supernature reveals. All seeming contradictions are just that: seeming. Evolution is, in the end, just a way of saying God formed Adam from the dust of the earth reeeeeeeally slowly.
