The article is an interesting piece simply because it can’t bear to say, “There’s something there. We don’t know what it is. End of story.” Instead it sort of morphs into a diatribe about UFO’s, an advertisement for Occam’s overrated Razor, and a rant about how dumb somebody is for speculating that it might be an alien craft, etc. Occam’s Razor is a good rule of thumb, but not an infallible metric, largely because we don’t always have a clear idea what “the simplest explanation” is. As a general rule, simple explanations don’t involve people rising from the dead, for instance. But in the case of the Resurrection, that does in fact turn out to be the simplest explanation for the birth of the Church. Far simpler than the apparently simple explanation(s) that the apostles stole Jesus Body, or Jesus swooned, or was an extraterrestrial, or whatever.

Now, I don’t think it’s an alien craft either. But I see no harm in speculating because we. don’t. know. what it is. It’s not sunk very deep, so I hope they get a sub down there and take a look at it. Should be interesting.
