…and it is, in fact, valid to do so, it is also important to make the case for why the Church teaches what it teaches about contraception.
If we don’t, we run the risk of confirming in the minds of the general public that contraception is, for Catholic teaching, something like what eating pork is for Jews or touching a dog is for Muslims: a mere ritual taboo, one of those weird things that “religions” do for no discernible reason.
The general attitude of our culture to such taboos is that they are fine, just so long as the religious weirdo’s fetish doesn’t get in the way of Real Life. The moment it does, it is to be swept away with brutality and contempt as an encroachment on Real Life by primitives with stupid taboos.
That’s exactly how this is being played in the MSM: “the Church wants to ban your access to contraceptives”. It’s a total lie, of course. But as a master of propaganda who enjoyed brief success some 70 years ago pointed out, the Big Lie is the way to go in Realpolitik.
It is therefore necessary to keep pointing out that the Church means to ban nothing. It’s simply means to refuse to be pressed into paying for acts it says are gravely immoral. And they are gravely immoral, not because they are taboo, but because they are harmful to all human persons and do violence to nature, human love, and fruitfulness.
