And with its preternatural gift for being completely wrong about nearly everything, the Thing that Used to be Conservatism sees, not the bleedin’ obvious danger to civilization in that, but Pope Francis as the problem for pointing it out.

My rule of thumb has become: if the Thing that Used to be Conservatism is rabidly in favor of it or rabidly opposed to it, do the opposite and you will probably not be far from the beam.  Aside from abortion (except when the unborn live in places we want to bomb), euthanasia (except with prisoners conservatives want to kill), embryonic stem cell research (except when W and McCain think it’s fine), cloning, and gay “marriage” (which GOP leaders don’t care about except to gin up the social conservative suckers), conservatives have been so wrong about so much so many times for so long that it simply amazes me that it still manages to inspire any trust at all–much less trust that so consistently supercedes trust in the gospel with such utter consistency among its shrinking demographic of devotees.

See to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fulness of life in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. (Col 2:8–10).
