A reader sends along…

what he calls a “fascinating look at America’s religions“. He writes:

When HIV/AIDS entered the homosexual community in the 1980s and 1990s, calls for “quarantine” were met with derision and instant rebuttal by public-health experts at every level of government. Now 1 in 5 gay American men are infected with HIV/AIDS. In this case, however, HIV/AIDS can drastically affect profits, as the porn industry will have increasing difficulty finding “actors” who want to risk a slow, agonizing death. At the very least, the industry could be required to reduce profits by spending more on health insurance for “injured” workers. And so, although arguing for quarantines in the public at large is a totally unacceptable instance of sexual fascism, quarantines are fine when required to protect corporate profits.

On the other hand, we see that requiring the use of condoms by force of law is futile. Why? Condom use is one of the most important social projects of the American public-health and school industries, who never tire of encouraging condom use through awareness programs, sex-ed classes, radio advertisements, etc. But condoms depress profits. And so, in this one instance, the condomites are silent, and prefer to continue blaring their promiscuity propaganda only at the un-profitable populations of adults with other jobs and the defenseless children of clueless parents.

And the profit that can instantly legitimize “gay-bashing” ideas like quarantines, and exempt from “safe sex” ideas such as condoms, is made from pornography. This is one of those small stories that shines like an X-ray through the gibbering hypocrisy of American society.

In Dante’s taxonomy of sin, Lust is reckoned as the least of the seven deadlies. That’s why it’s the last thing to be purged in his Purgatorio. It can still kill, of course, but it’s not as deadly as the sins of the soul like pride or envy or avarice, for instance. The devil’s strategy with Americans seems to be to use lust as the gateway drug to the deeper evils. And so, the agitprop from Hell’s Ministry of Propaganda blares 27/7 about the glories of lust, both hetero and homo. But when lust infringes on the practice of the deeper evils of avarice or ice cold pride and power worship, all of a sudden they take precedence.
