Conference Applies Catholic Social Teaching
STEUBENVILLE, OH—The Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS) will hold its 19th annual national conference at Holy Cross College in South Bend, Indiana, on October 22-23, 2010.
The conference will feature over 40 presentations by Catholic scholars and practitioners in the social sciences. They will present on a wide range of topics including “Tocqueville and Catholicism,” “Free Markets and Morality,” “Catholic Reflections on Psychology,” Pope Benedict’s encyclical Caritas in Veritate, “Law and the Social Order,” and “Christian History in the Western World.”
Dr. Charles E. Rice, professor emeritus at Notre Dame Law School, will give the keynote address at a banquet on Friday evening, October 22, on “The Catholic Church in the U.S. in the Obama Era.” The conference ends with a vigil Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The conference co-organizers are SCSS president and Franciscan University of Steubenville political science professor Dr. Stephen Krason, author of Catholic Makers of America, and Holy Cross College professor of history Dr. Christopher Beiting.
The SCSS is an organization of Catholic scholars and others in the social science fields who seek to approach social questions informed by the social teaching of the Church, to make that teaching better known, to build up a body of distinctively Catholic social science scholarship, and to provide support and camaraderie for each other in their efforts. It is headquartered at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio.
The registration fee for the conference is $45 for SCSS members and $55 for non-members. The banquet and Saturday luncheon are extra. There is a special reduced rate for combined conference registration and first-year membership for non-members who would be eligible for SCSS membership and would like to join.
A full conference schedule and registration information, along with requirements for membership, can be found at the SCSS Web site, www.catholicsocialscientists.org. For more registration information, contact Mrs. Beth Matanzo at [email protected] or 740-284-5836.
I like it! Catholic social teaching from actual Catholic teachers and not Talking Hairdos. More please!
