…that get trotted out against sundry aspects of Catholic teaching. His #7 (“It’s not infallible, so it’s wrong”) is a favorite, not just with dismissing Humanae Vitae, but with dismissing pretty much any Catholic moral teaching that gets in the way of what we want to do.
Feel free to add some of your own. Some of my favorites include
“Science has discovered that the universe functions according to knowable laws. Therefore, there is no Legislator.”
“The universe is extremely old. Therefore, there is no God.”
“The universe is extremely large. Therefore, there is no God.”
“The universe is much more complicated than my caricatured understanding of my remote ancestors allows me to think they understood, according to my ill-informed imagination. Therefore, God is a simple medieval folktale believed by simpletons like Thomas Aquinas, who thought the earth was flat.”
Some miracles are fake. Therefore, all are.
Christians are obscurantists who fear following the evidence where it leads. Therefore, we can dismiss reports of miracles without investigating them.
Hmmm… this could go on and on. Feel free to add your own.
