I was having a healthy and very rewarding discussion with several of my nieces and nephews who are in, or just out of college. We were discussing the Church’s stance on Marriage and Same-Sex Marriage. Although it was very challenging and actually quite rewarding I did get one very large surprise at one point in our discussion. As I said, we were discussing Gay Marriage and I must tell you that it was nice to see that they were open to the church’s view on why Same Sex marriage should not become law in NY (which it ultimately has). They really listened and I was able to change their minds on several points. I should add that many of their reasons for disagreeing with the Church’s stance were due to misinformation and lack of understanding, and thinking that the Church had the same deplorable views as ‘some’ Fundamentalists. But when we strayed into abortion and contraception… I was dumbfounded! They immediately started talking about population control. They were ALL FOR IT! They lamented on the fact that if there was NOT any contraception and/or abortion there would be millions more people on earth using precious resources and ‘raping’ the earth of all its natural resources. The US being the worst offender. It was all about the earth and environment that is being destroyed so we should NOT have more than one or two children; one person said none. They are convinced that the earth, in one or two generations will pass the point of no return and become a wasteland.

Mark, I know that the bible says that we are to “… be fruitful and multiply” …. and “subdue the earth”, but they would have nothing of it. I was so dumbfounded by their comments, that I didn’t know which direction to go. Sanctity of life, or subdue the earth? As I type this… I don’t even know what angle I want of you to take with an answer! At first, I thought… do I agree or is it possible that the earth will become a wasteland at our current rate of usage? Is limiting the population growth really a solution? Don’t they want their ‘family line’ to continue? What about God’s command to be fruitful and multiply? Help me Mark, for the FIRST time I think I may be totally dumbfounded, and speechless! What are your thoughts? And, Thank You.

The best resource I can recommend to overcome the brainwashing about over-population is the Population Research Institute.

Here’s a sample of their work:
