…a shattering new scientific discovery that proves…. not too much. Unless you think the ability to feel pain means something about the dignity of the human person. Like arguments about “consciousness” as a criterion for personhood, I’ve never understood this sort of reasoning. I’ve spent a third of my life unconscious. Does that mean you can kill me in my sleep?
“Well, you’re going to become conscious tomorrow morning!”
“Yes, and a fetus is going to become conscious (or, at any rate, able to process information) in a couple of weeks. So?
A lot of drunks feel no pain. Shall we abort them?
This sort of crude physicalism makes no sense to me.
