Dear Mr. Shea,
I am a student at Texas Wesleyan University, which is located in Fort Worth, Texas. Wesleyan has a student-run (but school-sponsored) weekly newspaper called The Rambler. This week’s edition of The Rambler featured a column (linked here) by Chuck Fain, the opinion editor of this paper. In this column, Mr. Fain opines (among many other offensive remarks) that the Catholic Church is a “multinational terrorist organization”.
Mr. Fain is certainly entitled to his (peculiar) opinions, but I submit that it’s just a bit much that my tuition dollars are funding this sort of bigoted diatribe. (The editors of The Rambler are paid for their duties, and as The Rambler is free, tuition dollars must, I think, pay the editors.) Too, there has been no statement from the administration of the school; they seem (so far) to be content with ignoring this situation. Bigotry against Catholicism, it would seem, is perfectly acceptable to them.
I am trying to call attention to this article and situation. Any help you can provide would be gratefully accepted: while a post on Catholic and Enjoying It! would, of course, be particularly welcome, an email to Mr. Fain and/or the school administrators (names, titles and email addresses listed below) would also be, I’m sure, most helpful. Even a comment on the above-linked article would be read and noted, and perhaps would make a difference, too.
I would appreciate very much if you could keep my name out of this; while I wish to call attention to the situation, I am employed on campus and would prefer to remain that way.
God bless.
Sincerely,
These are the names, titles and email addresses of the editor, those faculty members who supervise the paper, and several key administrators:
Chuck Fain (Author of the article, Opinion Editor of The Rambler): [email protected]
Dr. Harold Jeffcoat, President, Texas Wesleyan University: [email protected]
Dr. Steven Daniells, Dean of the School of Arts and Letters: [email protected]
Dr. Kay Colley, Student Media Director (Dr. Colley interviews and hires the student editors): [email protected]
Kelli Lamers, Faculty Advisor to The Rambler: [email protected]
If some wet-behind-the-ear J school punk were to say that Bernie Madoff + Jonathan Pollard + the bombing of the USS Liberty meant that we can casually take for granted that Judaism is a “multinational terrorist organization”, he would be treated like, well, this poor schlemielette who uttered an Unspeakable Question in the precincts of the Inquisitors and is now being punished by the Protectors of What May and May Not Be Asked.
But because this dunce makes this reckless, inflammatory and idiotic statement about Catholics, you get to fund it.
Unless, of course, you make noise. Academic administrators are notoriously cowardly creatures and spook easily when you make loud noises about cutting funding and refusing alumni donations. Unleash the power of the blog, especially if you are an alum or know someone who is. Teach them to make the Last Acceptable Prejudice as unacceptable as anti-semitism.
