I finally get a chance to defend the Latin Mass from post-Vatican II snobbery instead of defending the Paul VI rite from pre-Vatican II snobbery.

I’d like to, as they say, associate myself with Fr. Z’s reply to the tedious Jan Larson–and on basically the same grounds as I would when dealing with snooty folk who insist that if I am grateful for Mass in the Paul VI rite then I’m not a Truly True Catholic. The snobby elitism and contempt for the Tridentine rite that drips from Larson’s musings seems to me to be foreign to the mind of Christ. What’s wrong with worship offered in the Extraordinary Form. His whole article seethes with chronological snobbery and the conviction that he is a member of the Vanguard of History, kicking down the ladder by which he climbed to some final and permanent platform by which he can look down on his fathers. That’s not development of doctrine. That’s just Generation Narcissus pride.

I remain grateful for the Mass in whatever form I get it.
