Just got a call from an old friend who had left the Church eight years ago, partly due to the Scandal and partly due to a long and lingering difficulty with The Mary Thing. He had worked through his problems with the scandal (since that’s just due to human sin and not due to anything in the essence of the gospel) but was still hesitating at the thought of returning to the Church because of the Mary Thing.
Long story short: he read Mary, Mother of the Son and he said, by the sheer grace of God, the scales came off the eyes and he found himself thinking, “Why on earth was this ever a problem for me?”
Last night he made his confession and returned to the Church, thanks be to God! I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school-boy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. A merry Lent to every-body!
If I never see any more good come from that book, this is enough (though, of course, my prayer is that I see a lot more good come from that book for years after I’m dead and gone).
Welcome home, Mike!
