One of the hopeful signs is his discussion of how many “cultural Muslims” there are, who have no particular faith in their brittle religion and who are (like all human beings) looking for Him who alone can satisfy the heart. I’ve suspected in the past that Islam is far more brittle than the bedwetters and panic-mongers here realize. Instead of pouring our efforts into transforming ourselves into a panicky torture state, we should be focussing on the unprecedented opportunities we have to evangelize Islam. It is a mark of our own lack of faith that we Catholics, in greater percentages than the average American, place our trust in torture and not in Christ in this hour.
