…than abortion. Nothing. They could have had their whole damn package if they’d just backed off on the Sacrament of Abortion. But no way! Abortion is the summum bonum, the sole core value, the thing before which all else must be sacrificed.

And, as the League of Ordinary Gentlemen is discovering to its shock and dismay, exactly the same thing is becoming true of the Torture Party.

The issue is still in doubt, at least with respect to Catholics, because of the rising tide of voices who are are speaking out against the egregious Marc Thiessen and his attempt (with the help of willing accomplice Raymond Arroyo) to sell this filth as perfectly compatible with Catholic teaching. But the issue is already pretty much settled outside the Catholic bubble what with the majority of “conservatives” four square in favor of making America a torture state in addition to an abortion regime.

I think the time is rapidly approaching where the bishops will need to take a more aggressive approach than just reiterating what they’ve said before. The clever sophists have been at work and have managed to convince themselves that they’ve maneuvered out of the way of the bleedin’ obvious teaching of the Church.

The good news is that, in addition to the tiny bleats of protest in the blogosphere from those of us who have been listening to and rebutting Thiessenesque moral filth for six years, we are now starting to hear from more prominent voices who are saying “Whoa! Wait! What?”

Glad to see it!
