The Liberal Version of Shock and Awe

The Liberal Version of Shock and Awe 2014-12-31T17:44:34-07:00

Americans are deep believers in percussive maintenance. We believe that if you slap somebody, they will say, “Thanks! I needed that.” We believe that if John Wayne gets into a huge fist fight with somebody, they will wind up friends at the end. We believe that cathartic acts of violence will be redemptive. So we persuade ourselves that launching an unnecessary war to bring democratic capitalism to Iraq will issue in redemption.

And we believe (on the liberal side of the aisle) that forcing Catholic hospitals to perform morally abhorrent acts of violence against defenseless babies will somehow bring about a fixed health care system. Such an act, like whacking your glitchy computer with a hammer or smashing Iraq with shock and awe, is deeply irrational. There is literally no reason at all to think that the attempt to wrench Catholic health care into submission to the abortion regime will do anything but damage and possibly destroy Catholic health care. But leftist idiots committed to the sacrament of abortion can’t see past the ends of their noses.

I have a priest friend who once remarked to me that he doesn’t worry about the survival of the Church in the US. He worries about the survival of the US once the fools insanely bent on harming the Church succeed in destroying the massive infrastructure of social support the Church provides (virtually free of charge) to American civilization. You might just as well hope to run an engine without oil or a radiator.
