Michael Moore criticizes capitalism for being what it sometimes is: ruthlessly opposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ. He, being Michael Moore, naturally draws dumb conclusions from this but, not to be outdone, defenders of capitalism are now attempting the feat of elevating capitalism to a cornerstone of God’s Revealed Truth to the Nations, thereby proving Moore’s point about the dangers of capitalism and its current proponents, who have a very difficult time telling the difference between the gospel of Jesus Christ and the talking points of the GOP and FOX News.

Capitalism is not sacred tradition. Capitalism is a particular economic theory that often works tolerably well. It is also, when cut off from the restraining impulses of the gospel, an incredibly inhuman mechanism whose telos is not human virtue or sanctity, but simply and solely the acquisition of as much Mammon as possible. Christians are fools if they think that Jesus came to say, “On second thought, you *can* serve God and Mammon.”
