I’m Hard at Work Subverting the Dominant Paradigm

here in the Soviet of Washington! A kindly reader here in Western Washington has seen to it that Mary, Mother of the Son is comfortably ensconced in the King County Library System.

Just to give you a feel for how significant that is, do remember that King County *used* to named “King County”. You may not notice much of a difference between those two names, but local bureaucrats blew several wads of cash announcing that the county had been renamed for Martin Luther King instead of Some Dead 19th Century White Guy Named King. Was all the combined brain wattage of the human race spent worrying about the old county name sufficient to power to a small quartz crystal calculator? No. Are we as insufferable as all that? Yes.

In other book news, a reader writes:

I’m a recent Catholic revert (evidently that’s what’s it’s called) as I grew up Catholic, was Protestant for 14 years, and returned to the church 5 years ago. I’m writing because I have stayed ‘plugged-in’ to the Protestant community some and have dialogue with one Protestant pastor as well as others Protestants about various topics. I’m currently focused on talking with the pastor about Sola Scriptura versus the Catholic understanding of the Bible. I found your article: What is Sacred Tradition helpful as I’ve been researching and looking further into the topic. I find your take to be particularly helpful becuase of your understanding of Protestants views – which I believe I understand. I also find your emphasis on story, pictoral images/metaphor (i.e., bricks and mortar) helpful, as explaining the Catholic view to modern ears seems particularly difficult.

I was wondering if you knew of more resources that would be particularly helpful in this arena of apologetics? Any of your books? Web postings? I’ve found various sources helpful, but none excellent. I’d be grateful for any guidance you can provide.

Also, are there particular methods or ways of going about the argument that you have found helpful to Protestant ears?

Thanks much!

The book you want when it comes to the whole issue of sola scriptura is By What Authority?: An Evangelical Discovers Catholic Tradition. You can order it from me here. Also, Henry Graham’s Where We Got the Bible is a classic. Those two should do the job.
