I think that’s good. The whole machine Maciel built was built to go on doing what he desiged it to do: cover his ass. It needs to be disassembled piece by piece until the machine is gone. The parts of the machine and the lines of code that were there to go on robotically spewing out happy talk about “Nuestra Padre” and denying, minimizing, covering up and evading the bleedin’ obvious need to get gone. Some of the robots at the top may well need prosecuting.

Then, if possible, the Church needs to find a way to salvage what can be salvaged of the faith, goodness and dedication of the people who were genuinely exploited. I have no idea how that will work. There’s some notion apparently of “re-founding” the thing. I’m skeptical this will work. What, exactly is being re-founded? Maciel’s machine? Why? Why not start something new rather than something that will necessarily look back to a corrupt machine built by an evil man precisely for the purpose of facilitating his growth in wickedness by exploiting the honest piety of his victims? How about starting with the honest piety rather than with preserving the memory of the evil man?
