that the Dems would force us to pay for their Most Holy Sacrament of Abortion, the only core belief they have?
Any doubt whatsoever? It’s the *only* thing the Democrat party stands for in a world of shifting and kaleidoscopic political allegiances. When the Democrat party gives up on abortion as its sole core value, then we will really know that a serious sea change in American politics has occurred. At present, abortion constitutes a sort of anchor point in American politics.
What I mean is this. The consequentialism by which Democrats justify abort has only increased its grip on the American heart in the years since Roe. Conservatives started out opposing abortion on the grounds that, in addition to it being the taking of innocent human life, it was being justified by the sinister arguments of consequentialism (“let us do evil that good may come of it!”). The trouble is, the argument has shifted over the years and it is the opponents of abortion who have moved, becoming more like the Dems by embracing consequentialism to justify torture. Now, much of what used to be called “conservative” is basically as morally relativistic as the pro-abortion crowd. It still opposes abortion by a sort of accident of tribal affiliation (“We’re conservative. We’re against abortion.”) But it can no longer give a rational explanation of why because it has, just as much as Nancy Pelosi, embraced the notion that good ends justify evil means.
So abortion and the consequentialism the Dems embraces to justify it remain the controlling narrative of American politics at this hour. If the Dems ever really repudiate all that and return to their old tradition of caring about the powerless, then we will be witnessing a really monumental change in American politics. But so far there is not even a cloud on the horizon the size of a man’s hand indicating this is likely. All the clouds that *are* gathering a black ones and they are over our entire ruling class, both Dem and GOP. None of their leaders cares about the common good. They are all about themselves. The only one of the lot of them I’d trust (a little) is Ron Paul.
