Fr. Richard John Neuhaus once remarked that “waiting for an outburst of civic courage among academics is steady work.”
Having worked and lived among academics for many years, I can attest to this. Where appeals to such tired things as principles, the Magisterium and common decency often fail, threats to purse strings will often be responded to by academics with a nimble alacrity that reminds you of a 90 year old man suddenly doing cartwheels and handstands. If enough ND alums turn of the spigot of donations, some changes for the better will happen.
Something similar seems to have happened out here at our own Apostate U, when word got out that the inimitable Ann Holmes Redding, Muslim/Piskie priestess, was their choice for the person to teach the New Testament to young skulls full of mush. I know of at least one family that stopped financial support to SU (with a vivid explanatory letter noting that they would be contacting other alums).
Shortly thereafter, Redding was no longer in their employ.
Academics are cowards. Squeeze the financial carotid and they will listen.
