(Which reminds me of a story told by Fr. Bernhard Blankenhorn about a Dominican scholar he knew who lived in Jerusalem. The guy was very amused by American and continental scholars who were filled with elementary doubts about stuff like the existence of Bethlehem: “You get on a bus. You go a few miles. You get off. There it is!”) One wonders who Paul thought he was rebuking if Peter did not exist.

Some Fukuyama of biblical studies decides to stake his claim on the notion that we have reached “the end of biblical studies.” That’s it. We’re done. Some atheist scholar says Scripture has nothing more to tell us, so it’s time to pack it in.
