Pro-life: The More, the Merrier

Pro-life: The More, the Merrier

Recently somebody wrote to ask what I think of gays and atheists participating in prolife rallies.  They disapproved.

I’m surprised this is an issue with anybody, but here’s the deal: When your house is burning down and a crowd of neighbors comes to help put out the fire, you don’t do an ID check or ask if they are heterosexual enough to throw a bucket of water. No quiz on adherence to the Creed is necessary. Muslim hands can point a hose and squirt. Atheists can work a bucket brigade as well as Catholics or Evangelicals.  Jews, pagans, and disco fans, all welcome.  We can sort out our differences after the fire is out.

Besides, pro-life atheists can be pretty funny. A friend marched here in Washington and the secular prolifers had a sign reading, “For the Embryology Textbook Told Me So.” It’s helpful to have atheists out there reminding pro-aborts that the science is all on our side and it is they, not Christians, who perpetually descend into mystical bafflegab about when ensoulment occurs, and where the bright line between between mere tissue and personhood lies.
