A reader observes: This shows why capitalism is incapable of forming a rule of life. It’s about money, nothing else. You can’t blame capitalists for this. But you can take everything they say about “working hard and following the rules” with a grain of salt. Capitalism, rather like the American system of government, depends on a reasonably Christian culture in order to keep working. Because of that association, people sometimes cherish the illusion that democratic capitalism *causes* a reasonably Christian... Read more

From ribbons round the solar system, to meditation on Jack Horner’s immortal question “Who gives a s*** what killed the dinosaurs?” to the sundry ways in which global warming is not panning out and NASA scientist prophecies of eco-catastrophe are worth somewhat less than the advertised value, Mike Flynn is worth a read. Plus, there’s always a bonus sci-fi question, since the guy is a terrific sci-fi writer. Read more

My name is David and I am a young adult Catholic looking to move to the Seattle area temporarily for a few months. My mother lives in Seattle and I have visited many times, however, I have sometimes experienced problems with the liturgy at local parishes in the area and I would like to know what parish(es) you would recommend for sound, orthodox Catholic teaching in fidelity to the Holy Father and magisterium (preferably with an active young adult group).... Read more

Yesterday, some of my cringing lackeys were upset because I asked for your thoughts, which cringing lackeys are not used to having. They registered bleats of protest against this violation of the natural order in my comboxes. I am happy to report this morning that, thanks to the miracle of IP tracking, these people have all been located and lobotomized by my special ops forces and the threat has been neutralized. I am confident that there will be no further... Read more

Within the breast of yet another Greenie lies the stony heart of a genocidal maniac: It is certainly true that “fewer people equals a greener planet” is simplistic. In 2050, 95% of the extra population will be poor and the poorer you are, the less carbon you emit. By today’s standards, a cull of Australians or Americans would be at least 60 times as productive as one of Bangladeshis…. So the richer a country gets, the more pressing the need... Read more

Some of your readers may be familiar with Estes Park, Colorado, the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Last Monday a fire gutted the Park Theater Mall, destroying the 95 year old building and the 12 small businesses housed inside. This is a serious blow to our little mountain town. A prayer of thanksgiving for the firefighters who were able to save surrounding businesses, including the historic Park Theater, oldest movie theater west of the Mississippi in continuous use.... Read more
