My ranks continue to swell with hearts and minds. Now if I could only get the rest of their bodies as well! Today, my pretties, I share this offering by Dr. Seuss in tribute to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong Il: On the far-away island of Sala-ma-Sond,Yertle the Turtle was king of the pond.A nice little pond. It was clean. It was neat. The water was warm. There was plenty to eat.The turtles had everything turtles might need. And they were all... Read more

A reader writes: I found out yesterday that my husband and I are expecting our third child! This very exciting news is tempered with anxiety, because this is my fifth pregnancy (we’ve lost two babies to miscarriage, in Dec. 2006 and March 2009). Prayers for a healthy baby/pregnancy would be appreciated! P.S. If it’s a boy, his first two initials will be G.K. in honor of Chesterton – his middle name will be Keith, actually, but that’s after my father-in-law.... Read more

I had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend! We went with our Scouts out to Cle Elum and then even further into the boonies (four miles down a dirt road to Lord o’the Flies Campground). Well, it wasn’t really called that, but there were a huge number of flies. However, we noticed that they disliked the shade as much as we disliked the sun. So that worked out okay. East of the mountains is a whole different ecosystem. Dry with zillions... Read more

For a friend whose family member has been diagnosed as bi-polar, for peace and justice to reign in their family, and especially for the children in the family. For a friend whose uncle died yesterday. For a friend whose son just landed in Afghanistan for a 7-month tour of duty. He’s serving as a corpsman, the Navy’s equivalent of a medic for the marines. His training was in radiology, but he’s going out with the convoys. For a reader who... Read more

Abortion. What’s the big deal? You little people keep making your principled arguments and I, Obama the Great, shall continue trampling all over you. Oh, and if you get uppity, do remember that I’ve never quite gotten around to getting rid of all those cool powers Bush gave me. “Enemy combatant”: what a *useful* term in the era after the murder of George Tiller. Read more

One of the curious paradoxes of so many of the End to Evil types is how reflexively anti-semitic some neocon defenders seem to be. For instance, Dan Froomkin was a popular blogger for the WaPo (he wrote 2 of the 10 most trafficked columns for their website). However, he fell afoul of End to Evil type Charles Krauthammer when he tore apart Krauthammer’s grotesque and immoral apologias for torture (Krauthammer’s response was to call him “stupid“) and aggressively pursued the... Read more
