Weavers

I’ve just read the Fred Kellerman, who was the last of the Weavers died yesterday morning. He was eighty-nine years old. He was preceded in death by Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, and of course, Pete Seeger.

For my younger readers, Wikipedia tell us “The Weavers were an American folk music quartet based in the Greenwich Village area of New York City. They sang traditional folk songs from around the world, as well as blues, gospel music, children’s songs, labor songs, and American ballads, and sold millions of records at the height of their popularity. Their hard-driving string-band style inspired the commercial “folk boom” that followed them in the 1950s and 1960s, including such performers as The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul, and Mary, The Rooftop Singers, and Bob Dylan.”

They set the stage, quite literally for the folk movement as well not long after the protest movement of the nineteen sixties. Without them the soundtrack of my life would have been a lot different. And no doubt poorer.

Many thanks for them and the songs they brought to our hearts.
