A Buddhist Lord’s Prayer

A Buddhist Lord’s Prayer August 21, 2024

A dear friend, an old Zen hand and an apprentice teacher on the koan way shared her Buddhist Lord’s prayer with me. I immediately asked if I could share it at my blog. And she graciously consented. I find it a complement to the wonderful prayer attributed to Jesus. I would add that just as many scholars suggest his prayer is an outline and an invitation, Mo’s prayer is a presentation and an invitation…

Our Buddha Nature,

Which art in all of us,
Beloved be thy name.
Thy kingdom here,
and everywhere,
In me as it is beyond.
Give us this moment our boundless awareness,
and may we atone, bowing down.
Let us see through temptation,
delivered from duality.
For just this is the kingdom, the mind, and the open heart —
for kalpas and kalpas.
All beings.

And, of course, we need to return to the heart source…
