Bill Clinton’s Muslim Mention – Bad? Good? Confusing?
Near the end of Bill Clinton’s speech, meant to introduce the world to his wife Hillary (because who doesn’t know who Hillary Clinton is?), he began to “riff about the kinds of people who should join Hillary’s effort, according to this article in The Atlantic:
‘If you love this country, you’re working hard, you’re paying taxes, you’re obeying the law and you’d like to become a citizen, you should choose immigration reform over someone that wants to send you back,’ he said. Fair enough. … ‘If you’re a young African American disillusioned and afraid … help us build a future where no one’s afraid to walk outside …’ No problem there. …”
Then he said, “If you’re a Muslim and you love America and freedom and you hate terror, stay here and help us win.”
Stay here? Only under those terms and conditions? Because that’s all we’re good for? I’d call that a poorly-worded statement. Some Muslims chastised others for being too sensitive and “splicing and dicing” Clinton’s statement. Still other Muslims cried foul. Fellow Patheos Muslim blogger Hind Makki said, “No one told Bill Clinton that American Muslim citizens’ right to be in America is not predicated upon a national security framework.”
So there you have it! Of course there were other “Muslim moments” at the conventions that I missed! Add your comments below.
