Environmental Racism
It’s amazing that a Muslim woman in a controversial interview rocks the foundation of American Muslim sensibilities but another ongoing crisis of marginalized people subjected to environmental racism doesn’t not elicit a similar reaction. The Flint Michigan water crisis garnered little attention in the form of articles, clicks, likes and shares by Muslims compared to the tiresome story the “hijabi-Playboy.”
Presently, Native Americans are struggling to protect their water from contamination by the installation of the Dakota Access Pipeline adjacent to their land, yet Muslims are obsessed with writing about a Playboy article. NbA Indigenous and Black Muslims are working hard to raise awareness, but the #SupportStandingRock project struggles to get American Muslim support. There have been several calls, fundraising and protests organized as well by MPower Change and Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative.
So before typing another word defending or disparaging she who will not be named, why not learn a little more about allying with Muslims in safeguarding the planet with which Allah provided us?
And before commenting, “Muslims can do both,” save it because they don’t.
