Yesterday I had a conversation with a friend that reminded me about something that happened in the early part of the summer.  We were talking about how when your child is involved in an activity that requires you to be a spectator with all the other parents, even though you see all these parents many days a week, most weeks of the year, and for many years on end, if you are introverted…it is difficult to be around them.  I... Read more

Last week or so I was given the One Lovely Blog award by a lovely blogger, and I’ve been shuffling around trying to figure out what to do about it until now. The Rules: 1. Give credit to the awesome person who nominated you 2. Describe 7 things about yourself 3. As I sit here eating my lunch of leftovers from our Eid dinner, I’m reminiscing about yesterday’s Eid celebration, and the days leading up to it. During Ramadan the last several years, we’ve hosted a community Iftar at the Masjid, the years prior to that, we contributed to the fund for those dinners. This year we invited close friends to our home, and sent meals to homes we knew needed a little help. This Ramadan was as different from all... Read more

When I am curious about something, I research.  When I wanted to become a mother, I read books.  When I wanted to be the best mommy out there, I read…I read…and I still read books, and listen to podcasts, and read blogs…and columns. It is 10:00 at night, the doorbell rings…it is our neighbor, G, delivering fried, sweet, pillowy, balloon like pastries of syrupy delight. This is an example of Turkish sweet genius! Mr. Fox, KHALED and I have begun to plan our next dish to send over. I have 2 days to get it just right. Read more

The area of town in which I live has a large subsection of Muslim families. It’s the same everywhere, I think. Like minded people tend to cluster together. I’m so used to seeing the hijabi ladies walking, shopping and driving everywhere I go, I often don’t recognize it as something unique. Then something happens that draws my attention to how wonderful our librarians are at being inclusive to all the religions that are present in our city. Read more
