The people asked Moses to meet with God in their stead. It was just too terrifying for them. From Genesis to the Revelation there are stories of those who met with something or someone Other, and their immediate response was to fall down as if dead.

We’ve learned our lesson. Thinking we are doing people a favor, we have made it impossible for people to have direct experience with Otherness. Pretending we have provided a method of approach, we have actually provided a maze of prevention.

This, primarily this, is the business of religion.
