This does not mean that we ought not to pray. That’s another issue.

Paul says in Romans that we do not know how to pray as we ought to pray, so the Spirit intercedes on our behalf with groans that cannot be uttered. Therefore we cannot know the connection between our desires, our ignorant, our inarticulate prayers and that which follows. We would like to believe in cause and effect, that we are actively involved in that model, and that we are the lords of the process.

But this is only illusion and vanity.
