should i start another church?

should i start another church? May 15, 2011

Yes, another startup. I’ve planted other churches before. So, here are some of my thoughts about soon starting another church community:

  1. Sunday night maybe? I don’t want to compete with local churches.
  2. I miss that kind of fellowship.
  3. I feel the need to be in the game if I’m going to critique it with integrity.
  4. Several people have asked me to start one.
  5. I miss regular study and teaching and serious, lively discussion.
  6. I want to participate again in the experiment of healthy spiritual community.
  7. Should I start in my home or another place perceived as more “neutral”?
  8. Perhaps some music provided that is non-religious.
  9. Silent prayer.
  10. Maybe communion to end it?

A couple of years ago I was invited to a small community in Nova Scotia, Canada that I fell in love with. You can read about my experience with this community here, here and here. They would hesitate to call themselves a church, but I think that’s what they are. A healthy one too. Not without its issues and problems, but healthy nonetheless. In the same way, I wouldn’t call what I would be doing a “church”. But I believe that’s what it would be.

These are just some thoughts. Lots more. I’m feeling more and more urgent about it. So I’m thinking it may happen soon.

What are your thoughts? Especially local folks.

I have a book of cartoons that addresses issues like these. For just $9, order Nakedpastor101: Cartoons by David Hayward“, from amazon.com, amazon.ca, amazon.de.
