I know what it is to be a leader. I’ve experienced the intoxication of power. I know what it is to be upset when those I lead don’t agree with me and are vocal with their dissent. I remember how much easier it was when everyone was enamoured by my leadership and impressed by my charisma. I realize how much faster things got done and our goals were reached when there was 100% cooperation.
Then one day I decided that, as a church, we didn’t need to go anywhere. And if you don’t need to go anywhere you don’t need a leader. We didn’t need goals. Vision actually hindered community. Agreement wasn’t necessary. Cooperation could be a fabricated and superficial disguise. This was when my best ministry began. And perhaps what brought it to its end.
This is most difficult for communities to understand and even more difficult to adopt and practice.
