I think that was what was actually going on at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Instead of following an uncontrollable God, they literally invested in a god that they could create and worship, and then receive endorsement for what they already believed and did. It’s far more predictable and safe and fun.

These kinds of gods love being funded by the people to give people what they want and think they need. It’s a closed loop of mutual self-gratification.
